Matabeleland needs more than 4,000 qualified teachers according to the Local Authority with Binga, Nkayi, Lupane, Bulilima, Matobo and Mangwe, the most affected areas.
As it stands Matabeleland North 2 541 and Matabeleland South 1070 teachers while Bulawayo needs about 170 teachers.
The main subjects affected are Sciences, Mathematics and Practical subjects as teachers shun being posted in remote areas or moving out of the country. This of course has impacted on the quality of education offered in the region.
Bulawayo’s main requirement is secondary school teachers while the other two regions need both primary and secondary school teachers.
We wonder how much the laudable education reforms currently going on will do towards improving the situation in Matabeleland.
