It is a fibre product which will retail at $39 with a 15GB on a connection of up to 5mbps. A once-off activation fee of $49 is required and it comes with a phone service which is free to call from ZOL to ZOL.

ZOL CEO Denny Marandure announced the new product at a launch to the media at Meikles Hotel in Harare on Wednesday.

He spoke of the Internet being basic human right:

The right to internet access can meet the necessary conditions to be a
human right; as a right it should be universal, everyone should have access not just a few. The internet is becoming much more than just a tool but is becoming a fundamental part of society creating a new sphere of interaction that everyone has a right to have access to.

Marandure said that cost was a hindrance for the wider availability of Internet connections in Africa. However, his company feels that the Internet is linked to economic empowerment and growth, thus the step that has been taken.

In Zimbabwe, ZOL, through its parent company, Liquid Telecom Group, has taken the lead through the deployment of a nationwide fiber broadband network that is playing a key role in the economic development of the country and the quality of life of its citizenry. This is why at ZOL we’ve decided that playing a leading role in enabling access to the high speed internet is not merely a technological one but one that is central to the economic turnaround of our economy.

The product is available immediately from ZOL in parts of Harare, Mutare and Bulawayo with more areas to be added soon.

ZOL says it is currently connecting 80 customers on its fibre network per week and this Basic Essentials package should see even more connecting onto it.
