About THOSE Harare Sex Lists…

A list of names has been doing the rounds in Harare and they have rocked people back and forth.

The lists of allegations of misbehaviour by socialites, business men & women and famous people in the City of Harare.

The lists have been the rage on Whatsapp and Facebook groups and oh lawdy lawd.

Just as a disclaimer, it must be made clear that we have no idea whether those people accused of one thing or the other are guilty of things they are accused of. This post is not about whether they are engaging in improprieties or not. We weren’t there so we can’t say for sure whether that is true or not.

What we do know, is that this is something that opens up our society to a dangerous precedent. The implications on people’s right to privacy is bigger than most people think.

We are talking about the unethical act of exposing people’s alleged HIV status and talking about who they may or not be sleeping with. This is essentially destroying lives and is tantamount to revenge porn more than anything else.

Now, one may feel that what someone did was particularly abominable. Does splashing their names out really solve anything? Does it not take our society backwards? You have a right to be upset and angry if someone treats you in a manner that does not sit well with you or any other human being for that matter. Be angry.

What this does is that it also opens up is where now, some individuals just put out lists to sully someone’s reputation to settle a personal score.

We do feel if someone is engaging in criminal activities – that is some being accused of stealing and drug-dealing –  there are avenues for these things. There are police officers, courts and the whole works.

At a time when the country needs to focus on growth of the economy and all that other mess, this can’t be any good can it? What purpose it is supposed to serve is beyond us. It makes for great gossip for some but in the grand scheme of things it can’t be any good for our society.

It simply can’t. It is a distraction from some important issues that need attention. Like, could we create some jobs please?

With so much to focus on, we chose this?

We will not be publishing any of those lists on this website. For the avoidance of some people then slapping the lists in the comment section, for the first time ever, we have disabled it.
