Metro FM Award-winning artist Berita Khumalo performed in a hastily put-together show at the Hala Selous Hotel in Harare on Friday night.
The affable Berita said she was on a two-day holiday from her South Africa base but had now extended it by a week after Hala Selous came in and asked her to perform. She also has another show on Thursday at the same venue by the way.
We’d never watched her perform more than two songs before. There was that time at the Book Cafe open mic sessions when she wowed the audience with her guitar skills and ability to engage with the audience.
It was a mature audience on Friday. She appeals to that sort of crowd. The likes of Lavuka’s Mandla Ncube as well as Napoleon Nyanhi, Bongai Zamuchiya and Comfort Mbofana from Star FM along with Innocent Tshuma (he’s heading the bid or Yes FM) were in the audience to be serenaded on a lovely spring evening. Morris Touch from ZiFM was the MC.
Her solo set featured mostly her own original music, some from her gold-certified album The Conquering Spirit, including the smash hit Thando Lwethu, which had the audience singing along. Berita also played songs from her upcoming album, she says will be released next year including a song we liked which she gave a title to but says, is untitled for now. We’d like to tell you the title but she said ha-ah and when a Nguni woman says ha-ah then that’s that.
On the whole, the audience had a lovely time, the sound issues with the guitar from time to time aside and we got to see up close and personal why Metro FM decided this young lady deserved the gong.
We’ll be keeping an eye on this one. She is also rather pleasant to look at. That helps.
