Cameroonian footballer Albert Ebosse has died from head injuries after being hit by an object thrown the crowd.
Ebosse had scored for the home team JS Kabilye but that as not enough for his team to lose to 2-1 to bitter rivals USM Algiers. As the final whistle blew disgruntled fans started launching objects onto the pitch.
24 year-old Ebosse, who was the league’s top goal scorer last season, was struck on the head. He was taken to hospital where he succumbed to injuries. The news was confirmed by his club.
The stadium has now been closed indefinitely.
Confederation of African Football president Issa Hayatou has called for what he calls ‘exemplary sanctions’ against the hooligans.
The news comes in the light of violence that erupted a few weeks ago when a match between Zimbabwean rivals Highlanders and Dynamos had to be stopped several times when fans of the former started throwing objects onto the pitch. Dynamos were leading 1-0 against the home team.
The violence culminated in the death of a Bosso fan a few hours after the match.
Violence at Barbourfields has become a fixture over the 10 years and as yet, not enough has been done to stamp it out.
Does it have to take the death of a player though for appropriate measures to be taken to stop this sort of thing?
