Book Cafe To Host Chiwoniso Commemoration Gig

On Thursday 24th July, Book Cafe will play host to a Chiwoniso tribute concert. The date marks a year since Zimbabwe’s mbira legend passed away, and the show will feature a number of artists paying tribute by performing Chiwoniso songs.

Artists include Victor Kunonga, Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Edith we Utonga, Ba Shupi, chikwata.263, Comrade Fatso, Nyamasvisva from the group Mawungira enHarira, Eve Kawadza, Tinashe Mukarati and Verity Norman, all backed by Chiwoniso’s backing band, Vibe Culture.

Also entertaining well wishers on the night will be DJ Take Fizzo presenting a selection of remixed Chiwoniso favourites.

Earlier on in the day a discussion will take place from 5.30pm on the music of the Zimbabwean icon and panelists include Professor Fred Zindi, Ammara Brown and Chiwoniso’s ex-manager Tsungi Zvobgo.

The main tribute concert will start from 8pm and apart from the live performances there will also be screenings of tributes from some of Chiwoniso’s international friends including Max Wild and Metaphysics and never before seen footage of Chiwoniso’s solo performance at Zimfest 2009 in London.
