Shoko Festival Announces Poetry Competition Shortlist

Shoko Festival has announced the 10 poets shortlisted to be published on Poetry International, a Dutch website.

Some of the poets are Zaza Muchemwa, Aerosol, Vokal Da Poet, Dikson, Conarth Macheka, Philip Ngomashi, Tinashe Tafirenyika, Gwinyai Runyowa, Batsirai Chigama and Panashe Madziva.  These will showcase their work at the Word Garden event at Book Cafe on Wednesday 19 March 2014.

The call for submissions included seasoned poets as well as novices of the art. The poems were judged on their freshness, wit, insight, imagery, alliteration, assonance, rhyme, rhythm, metaphor amongst other poetic devices.

The competition was open to entry to an online audience on the Shoko Festival facebook (ShokoFestival) and twitter (@shokofestival). The judges then made a shortlist of the top poems from the dozens of poems received. The performances at Word Garden are the final stage of the competition as the panel of judges – including Chirikure Chirikure, Comrade Fatso and publisher Irene Staunton –will select the best poems  Published poets will receive US$50 for their poem and the poet of the overall winning poem/performance will receive a prize of US$150. The poems will be published and also released as audio poems on one of the world’s leading poetry websites, Poetry International (Holland).

Shoko Festival is Zimbabwe’s fastest growing international arts festival. The festival set from 25th – 28th September 2014 will feature an international poetry slam with poets from around the world.
