On The ZBC Board Chairperson Being Fired Already

Before he could pop champagne Dennis Magaya was ejected from his position as Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation chairperson.

The statement announcing his being ‘fired’ read:

This is after the Ministry learnt today that despite Dr Magaya’s previous submissions, backed by a documented record, his consultancy services to Powertel face serious allegations some of which have been previously raised by some sections of the media. The allegations are that he has been a recipient of inflated consultancy fees and that he has been an undeserving beneficiary of the corruption of tender procedures by the recently dissolved Powertel board. Powertel falls under the Ministry of Energy and Power Development.

OK… so essentially they are saying they didn’t know that something was amiss with a guy who in the media was revealed to be getting about $528,000 a year from consultancy work with Powertel? OK… we knew that and our media ministry didn’t? Interesting. We even questioned it yesterday.

Shades of Allum Mpofu all over again? Although on a different kind of thing of course.

On a side note, it makes you wonder what the Powertel executives are getting.

On the positive side, at least they fixed the error really quickly.

As it stands Father Gibson Munyoro has been appointed to replace Dr Magaya as chair of the new ZBC board. In turn, the vacancy created by Father Munyoro’s elevation to the chair has been filled by Mr Pritchard Zhou.
