So the NewsDay has an issued an apology to actress and former ZiFM presenter Tino Katsande after they opened an article referring to her as ‘battered’.
The wording courted a lot of controversy with the newspaper being accused of misogyny by different sections of society, adding that the use of such an adjective ‘was judgemental and demeaned her personality’.
NewsDay has said that in hindsight it agrees with the public view and has apologised to Katsande.
For those who wonder what the fuss with the word is, Katsande was a victim of domestic violence two years ago in which her then boyfriend beat her up.
Now why do we think the apology is a good thing, beyond the fact that it had to be made?
Because they did not try to qualify it. It as unequivocal and showed that an institution is willing to get out of the ivory tower from time to time and respond to people’s concerns.
Another good look is the fact that readers are more engaged nowadays about issues, even the sort that would have disappeared under the radar before.
So well done to NewsDay and it’s readers.
