Telecel Reports Econet Over ‘Unfair’ Practices; Launches #TellSomeBuddie

Zimbabwe’s second largest mobile operator Telecel has reported its competitor Econet to the Postal and Telecommunications Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) over what it calls ‘unfair’ practices.

Telecel sent out a message on 21 July to its subscribers saying:

Dear Customer, Please note a local network is facing challenges completing Telecel calls on their network. They have been notified and are working on it.

Then via their Twitter account they revealed that the ‘local network’  in question was Econet in response to a customer:

Hi @honmas24, our sincere apologies. @econetzimbabwe have been advised of the issue & we are assured they are looking into it.

Telecel has been introducing a bunch of new innovative products as part of promotions chief among them being the MegaBonus, in which subscribers get 100% free bonus credit to call any network for any amount of airtime they buy. This has resulted in calls from Telecel increasing of course which won’t make the other lot happy.

So being cheeky lot Telecel being the cheeky lot that they are, they have changed their iconic #tellsomebody to #TellSomeBuddie, a play on words using Econet’s flagship Buddie product.
