COSAFA Cup: Zimbabwe Go Through On Penalties

Zimbabwe needed penalties to beat ten-man Malawi in the COSAFA Cup quarter final  tie at Nkoloma Stadium in Zambia.

Zimbabwe had taken the lead through captain Masimba Mambare in the 13th minute.

The task was made all the more difficult for Malawi when James Sangala was given his marching orders on the stroke of half time for a horrendous two-footed challenge.

However Zimbabwe lacked intensity in the second half and allowed Malawi back into the game when keeper Maxwell Nyamupangedengu scored an own goal.

It came down to the lottery of penalties where Devon Chafa,  Eric Chipeta  and Ocean Mushure converted for Zimbabwe, while Chiukepo Msowoya was the only one to hit the back of the net for Malawi.

The Warriors now play either Angola or  Lesotho in the semi-finals.

Zimbabwe have won the Cosafa Cup a record four times since its 1997 inception and Angola, South Africa and Zambia three times each.
