The World Health Organisation has issued a global threat following the recent discovery of a new SARS-like virus.
The so-called novel coronavirus “is not a problem that any single affected country can keep to itself or manage all by itself,” WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said on Monday.
The worry for Chan is that doctors currently understand too little about the virus so it has become her greatest concern. Noone knows where it hides and how people get infected.
Novel coronavirus is part of a family called coronaviruses, which cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, as well as a variety of animal diseases. However, the new virus is not SARS.
Half of the 44 people affected as of last week have died.
The name given to it so far is Middle East respiratory symptom coronavirus, or MERS-CoV.
Deaths are often caused by multiple organ failure. This comes after renal failure and sever acute pneumonia.
The big worry is how it has spread given the extent of aviation travel in the world.
As it stands, no travel warnings have been issued, there is no vaccine or treatments but there is enough to scare WHO.
Makes you worry given the way our health sector is in Zimbabwe. Given how many people visit Dubai, any of them could carry it back.
