THREE Lessons To Learn From The Life Of Jonah Lomu

All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu sadly passed away on Tuesday at the age of 40.

Jonah Lomu

In fact to simply refer to him as a New Zealand legend doesn’t do the business, He was a world rugby legend.

His life is a beautiful story with loads of lessons. And we have three to share with you.

Be compassionate

We were watching a documentary in which he returned to South Africa, where he made his name in rugby with an imperious performance  and the heartbreaking loss in the final to the hosts. The way he speaks to players from a team that broke his heart is beautiful. The touching moment when he visits Joost van der Westhuizen who is suffering from motor neuron disease at his home. The silent moments between them are just amazing.

Never lose the will to life

Lomu had a zest for life. In 1995 he was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a rare kidney condition and yet he continued to power his way to record books as a rugby player. Even though he was forced to quit the game he loved at 27 he carried on with the next chapter of life with enthusiasm. Even when the kidney he got in 2004 failed in 2011 he still lived his life beautifully. He had to spend up to six hours doing dialysis but he told Oliver Holt of the Daily Mail:

You have to try and stay up and be happy and positive about it.

Do the things you love

Jonah Lomu was rugby’s first superstar. And he made many people love rugby because of the way he played it. He played it fully and without apology. And even though he received a lucrative offer from the NFL he chose to do the thing he loved best. From that he not only was admired as a player but loved as a human being.

Thank you for the memories Jonah Lomu. Go well.
